Major Brand 10 Gallon Aquariums
When looking at each 10 gallon aquarium they appear to be very similar to each other. The three glass fish tanks – Top Fin, Marineland, AGA (Aqueon) are both very reasonably priced, but they do not come with lights unless you specifically buy an aquarium kit or a fish tank and hood combo. The two acrylic tanks – Seaclear and Clear-for-Life – are both significantly more expensive than the two glass tanks, however, they both come with hoods and light fixtures. They are also both available to be purchased for delivery from most online stores, when it’s a little more difficult to find glass fish tanks for sale online (for delivery) because of their fragile nature.
At the end of the day, it depends on whether you are able to pay additional upfront costs and whether you prefer acrylic tanks over glass tanks enough to go with one of the acrylic tanks. This aquarium is typically sized at approximately 20″ wide x 10″ deep x 12″ tall. When people or stores refer to a 10 gallon rectangular aquarium (glass or acrylic) they are usually referring to this size, plus or minus a half inch for each dimension.

10 Gallon Fish Tank Guidelines
10 gallon fish tanks are many people’s first fish tank because they are big enough for multiple fish but small enough to fit on a desk or table. Here are a few specs or guidelines on a standard, 10 gallon fish tank if you are considering purchasing one:
Number of Fish
If you follow the typical rule of thumb that you can hold 1″ of fish for every gallon of water than if you have fish at an average of 2″ to 3″ you will be able to hold about 3 fish in your new 10 gallon aquarium if it is freshwater. It will be less than that for saltwater. Please note that it is recommended you start with 1 fish and please test the water after 6 weeks to ensure that your aquarium is maintaining proper filtration to minimize nitrate or ammonia spikes.
Heater Size
A 10 gallon aquarium requires approximately 50 watts of heat so you would need either two 25 watt heaters or one 50 watt heater.
Filtration
A 10 gallon fish tank should have a filter that pushes at least 50 GPH of water through the filter. For saltwater roof tanks the flow should be between 50-100 GPH of total water flow (between the return filter pump and powerheads or similar).
Lighting
A 10 gallon fish tank should have at least 5 watts of light (for a non-planted freshwater tank) up to 50 watts of light for a full saltwater reef tank. Please note this is for standard florescent bulbs, LED lights would require much less! Please also note that because of the relatively small quantity of water in a 10 gallon fish tank you risk overheating the water if light wattage is pushing the higher end of 50 watts. Please utilize cooling methods as required including an open top with fan or a chiller in extreme cases.
